Campaigns

"Whatever the justifications are for maintaining the practice, there is no doubt that female genital mutilation is an obstacle to the attainment of the goal of health, development and human rights for not only girls and women, but for all members of our society". - Dr Ebrahim Samba, Former Regional Director for the World Health Organization Regional Office for Africa

Since its establishment in 1983, FORWARD has been very prominent in the campaign against Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) and successes have been achieved on a variety of FGM related issues, and on a number of levels. Campaigning has taken place in the UK and on an international level.

This overall End FGM Campaign has included campaigns for:

  • legislation for more effective legislation against FGM
  • non-medicalisation of FGM within the health care system
  • better health care and specialist services for girls and women affected by FGM
  • effective training on FGM for professionals
  • FGM to be seen as an abuse of human rights and an issue of child protection
  • increased protection for girls at risk of FGM
  • effective legislation against all forms of FGM in Sudan
