NEPAL: Underage marriage postponed after child club protest

22 April 2008

The family of Bimala Kumari Chaudhari, 16, of Morang Tetaria had to postpone her marriage ceremony scheduled for last Thursday on age grounds.

The marriage was postponed after a local child club objected against the marriage stating that the marriage was illegal as the bride was under-aged as per the Nepalese law, according to which the age of bride should be at least 18.

Her marriage was scheduled with Tilakram Chaudhari, 28 of Kasini Dhokaradhar of Morang. All preparations for the marriage had already been completed before the marriage is cancelled.
