IRELAND: Govt ordered not to deport Nigerian family

December 10th 2008

The European Court of Human Rights has instructed the Irish Government not to deport Nigerian woman Pamela Izebhekhai and her two daughters until further notice.

Last month, the High Court reactivated a deportation order which meant that the Sligo-based woman would be sent back to Nigeria.

She fears that her two daughters, aged seven and five, will be forced to undergo female genital mutilation if they go back.

Ms Izebekhai appealed the High Court's decision to the European Court of Human Rights, which has ordered that the interim measures remain in place until further notice.

Ms Izebekhai is understood to be hopeful that a positive decision will be made before Christmas.
