1 Sep 1998 - Mimi Ramsey, not satisfied with campaigning mainly in the USA, decided to take off to a rural area of Ethiopia to conduct her campaign to eliminate Female Genital Mutilation (FGM). Being Ethiopian herself, communication was not a problem.

6 Apr 1998 - FORWARD attended the National Black Members Conference of UNISON last November. We held a well attended workshop with members wanting to know more about Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) and how they could help in our campaign to stop the practice both in the UK and worldwide.

9 Feb 1998 - The mini project on vesico vaginal fistula (VVF) for which we received £1000 from Jo Bryant's group in Kent has been conducted. The money was enough to purchase 60 packs of treatment materials. Thus, sixty young women suffering from VVF were given repair packs for their treatment.

5 Feb 1998 - Our representative in Germany, Tobe Levin, attended the Inter Africa Committee meeting in Dakar last year. She met with other non-African campaigners against FGM . This group have formed a Forum - 'European, Pacific and Asian Countries (EPAC) against FGM'.

17 Jan 1998 - Thanks to the support of the World Bank, FORWARD is now working with PATH (Programme for Appropriate Technology for Health) in Kenya to mobilise men to campaign against FGM in two districts of Kenya: Kisii and Tharaka Nithi. This is a 2 year pilot project which if successful will be used as a model for other countries in Africa wherever FGM is practised. PATH works with a grassroots organisation, Maendeleo. 13 Jan 1998 - FORWARD attended a Conference on FGM organised by the The Ministry of Women in Rome in November last year. The Italian Government has now included FGM as a priority health policy matter for Ethnic and Minority groups.
