    20 Dec 2000 - On 19 December 2000, the committee of the General Medical Council took action to remove Dr. Abdul Baten Jalal Ahmed from the medical register for his willingness to perform female genital mutilation (FGM) on the three young girls.

  • International News - Kenyan Family in Court over FGM

    14 Dec 2000 - Two teenage sisters from Kenya's Rift Valley Province have won a court order preventing their father from forcing them to be genitally mutilated. A court in the Rift Valley Province issued a permanent injunction on their father, Puis Kandie, stopping him form allowing his daughters Ednah, 17, and Beatrice Kandie, 15 to undergo the practice.

  • International News - EU may ban Aid to States that allow FGM

    6 Dec 2000 - Third world countries that refuse to ban FGM could be stripped of their right to receive European Union Development Aid. Anna Diamantopoulou the EU's Greek Commissioner gave an impassioned speech at the European parliamentary.

  • First Graduation Ceremony at FORWARD Nigeria

    15 Nov 2000 - The Vesico Vaginal Fistulae (VVF) rehabilitation centre in Dambatta, Nigeria was set up just over one year ago with the aim of improving women's health, education, and economic status. On 11th November 2000 the rehabilitation centre celebrated the graduation of it's first set of members.

  • FORWARD in Europe - The European Network for the Prevention of FGM

    19 Jul 2000 - In 1998, the International Centre for Reproductive Health carried out a study on FGM in Europe with funds from the European Commission's DAPHNE Project. One of the recommendations from the study was the need to develop a European network for the prevention of Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) in Europe.

  • FORWARD Nigeria Project - 2000 Update

    16 Jun 2000 - FORWARD Nigeria has now been set up and all initial teething problems have been surmounted. The vesico vaginal fistula (VVF) rehabilitation centre is now six months old and the first set of our women are due to complete their time here.

    20 May 2000 - Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) is illegal in the United Kingdom. The Prohibition of Female Circumcision Act 1985 makes it so. However, to date, there is no record of any prosecutions having been brought in the UK.

  • Research on Prevalence of FGM in Kenya

    29 Apr 2000 - In April 2000, FORWARD sponsored the Agri-Health Initiatives in Kenya to conduct a study on the prevalence of FGM in the Semi-nomadic areas of Kenya, which were not covered by the Kenya Demographic Health Survey. The aim of the project is conduct a survey estimating the prevalence and incidence of FGM in three divisions in three divisions of the Nakuru district of Kenya.

  • FORWARD Ghana Project Update - Traditional leaders take the lead in eradicating FGM

    1 Jan 2000 - FORWARD participated in an FGM sensitisation workshop organised by the Association of Church Development Projects (ACDEP) in Bawku, Northern Ghana. The purpose of the workshop was to create dialogue amongst groups so that they could condemn Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) and allow community interventionists to get involved in campaign activities in this area.

    1 Jan 2000 - KCW (Kensington, Chelsea & Westminster) Health Authority have awarded FORWARD a six month grant to conduct a survey in this borough amongst health professionals and communities who practise Female Genital Mutilation (FGM). In order to effectively help Eritrean, Sudanese, Somalian and Ethiopian communities.

  • Condolences

    1 Jan 2000 - FORWARD regrets to inform our supporters of the death of two committed women in the campaign against Female Genital Mutilation (FGM). Betty Knights and her husband died in a car crash a month ago. Another key fundraiser for FORWARD, Jo Bryant, sadly passed away recently.
