One of FORWARD's main functions is to provide and disseminate accurate and up-to-date information, advice and resources related to Female Genital Mutilation (FGM). FORWARD publishes and distributes this material to professionals, community workers and the general public.
Female Genital Mutilation is a sensitive issue and the practise is thus poorly researched. FORWARD has attempted to fill this gap by conducting and disseminating various studies in order to improve knowledge on FGM and inform policy and programming, as well as to identify sensitive approaches that integrate the gender and human rights dimensions of FGM.
Areas researched include FGM prevalence and impact in the UK, attitudes to and knowledge of FGM amongst practicing communities in the UK and their perceived access to health care facilities, inter-agency policies and procedures relating to FGM in England and Wales, and FGM knowledge, attitudes and responses by health professionals. These include case studies in London, Manchester and Birmingham.
FORWARD's publications also include FGM guides for professionals, and reports of the proceedings of conferences and Inter-Agency and NGO Forums related to FGM and child marriage. Also available to purchase from FORWARD's publication list are various non-FORWARD FGM publications.
FORWARD and the Forum on Marriage and the Rights of Women and Girls have also produced a number of publications on child marriage which are also available on the FORWARD Publication List.
