FGM and Child Protection Training

FORWARD's FGM Training Programme

FORWARD has been at the forefront of training professionals and voluntary and community organisations in the UK on the issue of FGM and Child Protection. Based on the premise that professionals and community groups must play an important role in the campaign against Female Genital Mutilation (FGM), and in the provision of good quality services and support for women that have undergone FGM, FORWARD offers a range of FGM training sessions. FORWARD continues to deliver this training to professionals from the statutory sector - including health, education, social services and the police, as well as to organisations from FGM practicing communities, and to the voluntary sector at large.

FORWARD's training sessions are developed and tailored to the specific training needs of the participating individuals and organisations, and reflect the issues, needs and concerns that they have. Please find below common learning objectives and topics covered in our training programmes.

Main objectives:

  1. To provide accurate information and create thorough understanding in relation to the practice of FGM.
  2. To empower FGM practising communities and organisations as well as relevant government agencies in the UK to take action against FGM.
  3. To scale up the campaign around the FGM 2003 UK legislation.
  4. To raise awareness of the negative health consequences (both physical and psychological), and human rights violations associated with FGM.
  5. To highlight regional and international human rights conventions / instruments which can be used in the anti-FGM campaign.
  6. To address the misconception that FGM is an Islamic requirement.
