1. Become a sponsor of FORWARD and make a donation to our work

By doing so you will enable FORWARD to scale-up the campaign to accelerate the prevention and elimination of Female Genital Mutilation in the UK and in Africa.

Specific recent activities include:

  • Taking the award-winning Senegalese director, Ousmane Sembene's film 'Moolaade' and education programmes to villages in Africa to foster dialogue on FGM and other harmful gender discriminatory practices. Your donation will help us to translate the film into different indigenous languages and to support community-based organisations in promoting discussion and activities towards the prevention of FGM activities at grassroots level.
  • Supporting and building the capacity of non-governmental organisations to scale up action against FGM and harmful gender discriminatory practices.
  • Supporting local campaigns for legislative measures to be taken against Female Genital Mutilation (FGM).
  • Assisting women's organisations and national social service departments to build indigenous child protection systems on Female Genital Mutilation (FGM).
  • Collaborating with health professionals and organisations to ensure that the special needs of girls and women affected by Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) are met.
  • Monitoring and reporting on Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) elimination and calling upon governments to account for the progress of their anti-FGM campaigns, including networking with other civil society organisations to hold to account those African governments that have ratified the Protocol to the African Charter on Human and People's Rights on Women's Rights.

2. Join and become a Member of FORWARD

Joining FORWARD is a great way of supporting our work. If you wish to become a Member of FORWARD, please download the form at the bottom of the page and send it back to us.

3. Organise fundraising activities on behalf of FORWARD

You could help women in need by organising fundraising events with family, friends or colleagues. Some ideas include arranging a dinner or fundraising party, taking part in a sponsored event, having a clear our and holding a jumble or car boot sale or selling some of your unwanted stuff on the internet, or running a marathon! We can provide leaflets and information about FGM and our work to assist your fundraising activities.

A variety of local organisations, be it a student group or community action organisations organise fundraising events on our behalf. For example, over the last year a number of student groups have organised showings of the film Moolaade, and raised money for us this way. If you are interested in also doing this please contact us and we can help! Other ways in which student groups have raised money for us include hosting club nights and fashion shows!

4. Help to promote awareness of gender-discriminatory practices

If you are a member of a local student or community group perhaps you would like to support FORWARD and promote awareness of gender-discriminatory practices through your organisation. If you would like to hold a discussion or seminar in your local area we can provide leaflets and information about FGM and FORWARD's work, and on some occasions a speaker. As mentioned above, we could also assist you to raise awareness and fundrais for FORWARD by organising a showing of the film Moolaade.

You could also write an article for a local magazine or newspaper to increase awareness and understanding of practices affecting African girls and women. When doing this it is necessary to do so in a sensitive manner and please ensure that you have sufficient understanding of FGM and the associated isues. Please refer to the FORWARD FGM resources for information that can help you, and we would love to hear about anything you would like to get printed, and would be happy to assist you with information you may require.

5. Write to your local MP to raise the issue of Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) and put pressure on the UK government to take increased action on FGM.

For example:

  • Demand that initiatives are undertaken to increase awareness of the 2003 FGM Act amongst FGM practising communities.
  • Request information on the percentage of British development aid devoted to the elimination of FGM in the UK and Africa and demand that the current amount is increased.
  • Ask for information about what actions are being taken by the local authority to actively protect girls at risk and women affected by FGM in your borough.

6. Support FORWARD's campaigns and join the FORWARD mailing list

As well as the overall ongoing campaign to eliminate FGM FORWARD regularly launches more specific campaigns to protect the rights and promote the dignity of African girls and women worldwide. The more people that show their solidarity and become involved in these campaigns the more widespread the benefits will be.
