Uncomfortable Conversations: A Letter To My Husband

This short film explores the impact of female genital mutilation (FGM) on not just individual women but the men in their lives, and the difficulty in having the ‘uncomfortable conversation’ around an expectant mothers FGM and her fear for her unborn daughter.

This video is one of eight produced in 2017 as part of the Building Bridges between Africa and Europe to tackle FGM/C project. The project aimed to increase the effectiveness of actions against FGM/C and improve the living conditions of girls and women in Africa and Europe by building bridges between young people from the civil society organisations (CSOs), professionals (media, health, psycho‐social, etc.) and communities from targeted African countries and migrant communities in Europe, by sharing good practices, strengthening links, and adapting existing best practices in a mutual learning and exchange perspective.

The project was led by AIDOS – Italian Association for Women in Development, in partnership with AMSOPT (Mali), Equipop (France), GAMS Belgique (Belgium), Mwangaza Action (Burkina Faso) and UMWA (Uganda) with the support of the UNFPA-UNICEF Joint Programme on female genital mutilation/cutting and FORWARD was one of the participating organisations developing films, our Community Programme Support Office Kabung Lomodong was trained in Uganda on film making skills and used those along with a script developed with the community women we work with and US Theatre Professor Lesley Delmenico, so produce this short film. It features professional actors as well as FORWARD Outreach Worker Mahasin and male Community Champion- Mohammed.
