11th July 2018 marks the 15th anniversary of the adoption of the landmark "Protocol to The African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights on the Rights of Women in Africa" more commonly known as the Maputo Protocol. It was the first continental instrument for the advancement of women’s rights in Africa.
The ground-breaking Protocol went beyond any preceding human rights instrument by detailing provisions for the economic, political, environmental, cultural and social rights of African women and girls.
Although the Maputo Protocol has been ratified by 40 African countries, gender inequality, discriminatory social norms and sexist laws persist on the continent and much is still to be done to ensure the rights of women and girls are fully respected, protected and fulfilled.
We aim to:
• Review progress in the ratification and implementation of the Maputo Protocol
• Discuss best practices in the implementation of the Protocol
• Highlight the contribution of African diaspora women to improving African women and girls right
• Discuss how to strengthen Diaspora voices in policy spaces in the UK and in Africa.
