India: SHRC Wants Reports on Child Marriage

The State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) has taken suo motu notice of reports that 10 child couples were forced to tie the knot on February 14 as part of a mass marriage ceremony at Mundargi village, Raichur.

The SHRC has asked the police to submit a report on the case. “It’s against the law to marry off children,” SHRC stated.

In another case, SHRC told the government not to acquire fertile and agricultural land to build an airport near Bellary.

“It’ll deprive farmers of their livelihood.”
