International News- FGM Prosecutions In Kenya

Thirty people from the Tharaka district of Kenya have been prosecuted by a court for secretly subjecting their daughters to Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) during the school holiday period in August 2000. The East African Standard reported that Magistrate Omasa Mogambi fined the culprits 2,000 Kenyan Shillings (about 25 US dollars) each, failing which they would service two months in prison. Twenty of the accused parents pleaded guilty to the charge of mutilation.
